If you are interested in studying at an American university, you have to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language. The test is widely known as the 托福.It is the most widely used language exam for American universities.

There are two major kinds of the 托福 test. The first is the IBT,or Internetbased Test.It is offered in most of the world and accepted by nearly every university and scholarship program in the United States. The other kind of the test is called the Paperbased Test or PBT.The PBT is less cosplaytly to take and does not require use of the Internet.

But how to get started with 托福?Here are some tips.

Plan ahead—It takes a long time to improve your 托福 score.Do not expect a big lift in your test results after two weeks. You will have to spend a lot of time and energy.

Master the basics first—You should have to be good at basic English before you take the test.If you score below 500 on the PBT or 70 on the IBT,study for a few months and come back to the 托福 later.

Get a study guide—It is easy to find study guides for the IBT.Pearson,Barron’s,ETS,and Kaplan all produce quality materials.Take a practice test once or twice a month. The best study guides will have explanations in the answer key.

Use outside resources—Remember, you are learning a language, not a test. You can improve your 托福 score by making English part of your daily life. Some simple ways are listening to English speakers, watching movies and reading newspapers. Some others are reading English textbooks, sending and reading text messages in English, and writing online in English.

The best way to do well on the 托福 is to know English well. The real goal of the test is to measure how well a student can communicate in Englishspeaking classroom.

Japan’s youth are losing interest in science and as a result, threatening the nation’s industrial progress.According to Japan Science and Technology Agency, young Japanese are surrounded by hightech devices, but are not interested in how they work.

Japanese businesses have succeeded partly because they’ve a great many engineers.A drop in interest could lead to a decline in __________ numbers and quality.“In the past, the young had a big interest in science and technology,” said Hirano, director of the agency’s policy department.

There are two main reasons for the problem. The first is known as “black box syndrome” of modern technology.

Electronic devices depend on tiny silicon chips, which can only be made in big factories, whose workings can’t be seen by the eyes. The devices, unlike machines of the past driven by gears and wheels, are simply boxes.

Young Japanese, brought up on video games and at home with computers, enjoy using modern technology, but this is a passive interest and different from the curiosity about how things work.“You need an active interest to get interested in science. This is declining in the young,” said Hirano.

about twothirds of Japanese in their 20s use PCs,twice the number of those in their 50s.But only 40% of those in their 20s say they are interested in news about science and technology, compared to 60% of the 50 to 60 year olds.

“Another reason for it is that life in modern Japan is too comfortable,”he said,“A wealthy society reduces people’s desire to modernize and develop their country. To a degree, you can’t avoid this when the fruits of science and technology are fully developed.” Similarly, science in Europe and the US has also suffered a lack of interest.

25.Japanese youth’s interest in science is dropping probably because__________.

A.scientists don’t make much money in Japan

B.there are too many scientists in Japan already

C.science is more difficult for young people to learn

D.they’re not curious about how hightech devices work

26.The underlined word “their” in Paragraph 2 refers to __________.

A.Japanese businesses’   B.Japanese engineers’

C.Japan’s youth’s   D.hightech devices’

27.Why does science meet the same problem in Japan, the US and Europe?

A.People are satisfied with the convenience hightech devices bring to them.

B.People believe they don’t need to develop their science any more.

C.People think hightech devices destroys the environment.

D.People don’t want to live the modernized life.

答案A

C

Ask anyone what is the most difficult part of changing their lifestyle habits and they are most likely to say,“staying motivated”.But a 36yearold professor from Carnegie Mellon University claims it may have the answer in the form of robot weight loss coach that dishes out daily health advice and encouragement.

Autom is the work of Robotics trends,a company which claims to be a pioneer in commercial sociallyinteractive robots.

The robot, which stands around 38 centimeters tall, has a head that swivels, blue eyes, and a touch screen which allows the user to input information daily about exercise and diet. Its creators say Autom will have daily conversation with its user lasting up to five minutes, giving feedback and encouragement.Over time,it will interact more with the user as it gathers more information about them.

Cory Kidd,a research team manager with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, claims research has shown that people find robots a more credible source of information than onscreenbased character.

In a controlled study in Pittsburgh City Council,15 dieters were given Autom for six weeks.Another 15 received a touchscreen computer with identical software and 15 were given a paper log.The study found, people using the robot were more likely to stick with their diets longer,in fact twice as long as those using just a paper log.

“While not one person among the computer or paper groups continued past six weeks, most who had Autom did not want to give her back at the conclusion of the study,” he said.

The bottom line is that a robot creates a more powerful and longlasting relationship with the user than a character on the screen.

Autom is expected to go on sale later this year in the United States for around 500.The robots which speak and understand Cantonese and Mandarin in addition to English according to the demands are also being developed.

28.What’s the passage mainly about?

A.The automated way to motivation.

B.The development of Autom.

C.The working principle of robot.

D.The way to change the lifestyle habits.

答案A

尤其是第一段第一句“Ask anyone what is the most difficult part of changing their lifestyle habits and they are most likely to say,‘staying motivated’.”

29.What can we know about the controlled study?

A.The subjects were divided by two.

B.Every person with Autom continued past six weeks.

C.The study was led by Cory Kidd.

D.People using Autom gained more benefit than other people.

30.Which institution is responsible for the development of Autom?

A.Carnegie Mellon University.

B.Robotics trends.

C.Federal Emergency Management Agency.

D.Pittsburgh City Council.

依据第二段第一句话“Autom is the work of Robotics trends...”

31.What can we infer from the passage?

A.The robot can’t speak English except Cantonese and Mandarin.

B.The robot that can speak many languages has been popular with the users.

C.The robot can help people change their lifestyle habits.

D.The robots that can speak many languages meet the demand of the customers.

I really love my job because I enjoy working with small children and like the challenges and awards from the job.I also think my work is important. There was a time when I thought I would never have that sort of career.

One Sunday,I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with me.I told her about my situation. She suggested that I should do a course and get a qualification if I wanted to work with children.I didn’t think I would be accepted because I didn’t take many exams in school. She persuaded me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience counted for a lot and I got on a parttime course.I had to leave my job with the family, and got work helping out at a kindergarten.

Nowadays, most of us teenagers have our own cell phones and some of us are addicted to playing with cell phones. As a result,we ignore the normal communication with our teachers and classmates.

There is no doubt that cell phones have a negative impact on our life.Playing with cell phones makes it hard for us to concentrate on our lessons.Sending text messages makes us lose the ability to communicate with others.Worse still,we don’t have much time for physical exercise.

So we’d better limit the time we spend using the cell phones.Besides,we should learn to communicate with our family members face to face, which helps build a harmonious family atmosphere
